I've removed the mini calendar from the home page and replaced it with the 'Upcoming Events' module.
Any events entered into the calendar within the next 30 days will appear here. You can click on the event to open it up.
Once you've opened the even, if the organiser has enabled it you can indicated if you're going to attend.
Hopefully this will be more useful than the calendar.
