my mate has asked me to get him some Castrol A747 for his old yam RD350 circa 1973/74.. i know he's using ordinary two stroke oil at the mo.. via the on-board oil tank... but he would like the smell that you can only get off castrol race oil.... and i know castrol oil won't mix with ordinary two stroke oil..

so

would just putting some in the fuel tank so it mixes with the fuel do ?

or

would he need to strip the engine down clean all the bearings & crank and just use the castrol A747 ?

or

can you just empty the oil tank of two stroke oil and replace it with A747 ?

Von, Giles on ND may know the answer.

Von,just run the 2 stroke out in the mixture tank and top it up with the Castrol, the two stroke oil has nothing to do with the bottom end lubrication.

Ta Mand.. He may pop in here some time and see this ?

there is another oil.. castrol R2 oil.. but not sure if it's caster based..

i have put R40 in me bike but that's a four stroke oil.. just a bit in the tank.. get a lovely whiff :)

am just not sure if it would work in a 2 stroke ?

T the big end bearing is lubed by the 2 stroke oil.. it's the main crank ones that's not... but that said i suppose you could just empty the oil tank and oil feed pipes and lob in the castrol oil.... and RUN ;)

I'm not sure about mixing the oil.

Tina, the bottom end of a 2 stroke is lubes with the oil that's mixed with the petrol, only the gearbox has oil in it.

To be honest, he'd be better running it on modern synthetic 2T oil - nothing smells better than Motul - even Castrol!

Don't put a dash of R40 in the fuel either, it's castor based and won't mix well with the 2T oil. At best it will foul up the plugs and at worst the reeds will get gummed up and it'll blow back up through the carb, and a seize will follow.

Thanks T & s1opp.. had me a word with a mate at work.. he run a LC on A747 but had to mix it in the petrol... found it to thick to use in the oil tank the pump could not cope with it.. seized the engine up in the end..

after looking up racing oils i have found that castrol A747 is for liquid cooled two strokes... not air cooled ones.

and like s1opp said, would be better off getting a full synthetic oil like castrol TTS Oil

or

the castrol super TT mineral based one..
